Don’t let summer pass you by (or do?)
The other day I realized that the summer was all too quickly coming to a close, and on that day there were just 13 days left until school started again. I thought it would be a good idea to make a list of 13 things I wanted to do - one each day - to really savor the season. (Yes, yes, I’ll share it with you…just read right on through to the end.)
After the list was made, I thought to myself WHY? Why do I feel I need to do these things? There are a few reasons including capturing moments with my sweet son while he is at this sweet age, and not wanting life to pass me by, but I think by far the biggest reason is guilt. Guilt that I work too much, I’m on my phone too much, that I don’t spend enough time with my family, that I don’t go to the gym, that I don’t text back and so on and so on.
But then I thought about the notion of making the decision to not feel guilty. Maybe easier said than done, but I don’t want to feel this way, and it has to start somewhere.
So that’s it.
I’ve decided.
I’m not going to feel guilty as the summer ends.
I’m going to be present, and enjoy my list because I want to, not because I feel I have to. I’m going to work because I love my job, look at my phone because TikTok is funny, and know that when it comes to family, sometimes distance makes the heart grow fonder.
So whether you are planning some big end of summer celebration for Labor Day (with one of our cheese boards, obvi), have a giant list of chores, or are just spending your own quiet time by the lake, know that whatever you decide, it’s ok.
xoxo,
Scott
13 Things to Do Before Summer Ends (In No Particular Order)
Go to a drive in movie - we’ve never been to the one in Warwick, and it’s been calling to me.
Eat a tomato sandwich - the tomatoes are at their peak and I NEED one - my recipe is very simple, and just like my grandma used to make. I eat them open faced so I can pile on the entire tomato.
Have an end of summer day in NYC - last year we saw Lion King, this year we can’t even decide!
Spend the whole day barefoot - so, so summery.
Find flowers and make a bouquet for our friends - I will let you know if we “find” rather than “steal”.
Spend an afternoon at the lake - to be clear, I hate this one, but Michael doesn’t.
Go night swimming - anyone have a pool we can borrow?
Have a no phone day - this will be difficult, but I actually can’t wait.
Drink a paloma - my recipe has no added simple syrup. Instead, I use grapefruit soda. Who am I, Sandra Lee?
Jump off the diving board - oh, ok.
Build a lemonade stand - Michael would make a killing with our Sparkling Roasted Vanilla Bean Lemonade outside of the Hopper House pre Jazz Festival. Is it too early to teach him about business?
Find a snow cone stand - I’m certain our tongues will be blue.
Go to a baseball game - in a somewhat shocking turn of events, turns out we love the Boulders.
There you have it - my list of 13 things that I may or may not do before summer ends! I’d love to hear what might be on yours. Email me at info@scottandjoe.co.
