Red Rock Cheddar: A festive choice for the Halloween season

‘Tis the season for a bold orange cheddar and this is one of our favorites. Did you know that annatto, which give cheddars like this one their orange hue, is a natural food coloring derived from seeds from South American achiote trees?

Region of origin: Wisconsin, U.S.A.

Type of milk: Pasteurized cow

Texture & color: A semi-hard, crumbly cheese that is rich orange with slight blue veins and a natural bloomy rind

Flavor: A fine balance of sharpness and creaminess

Perfect Pairings: Get all into apples with this one. Find all your faves at the farmers market or do a mulled cider with (or without) a little booze on a crisp fall evening.

Scott’s favorite thing about this cheese: “I love that this cheese combines three of my favorite things. Of course the flavor of cheddar is absolutely fabulous, but add on the bloomy rind, and it takes it to a cheese unlike any other. And just when you thought it was done surprising you, you find a subtle blue cheese taste peeking in. Is this even cheese or is it some brand new food?!”
